How do I know if therapy is for me?

If you're going through a life transition, are questioning your identity, wanting to explore the impact of trauma in your life, chances are you could benefit from therapy. Intensity and length of therapy may vary depending on specific issues.

What is your expertise?

I have a wide range of experiences working with adults, children, and families afflicted by trauma, addiction, and domestic violence.  Prior to my full time work as a therapist, I worked as a domestic violence advocate and as a domestic violence intervention facilitator. As a therapist, I've facilitated parenting groups, helping parents develop stronger bonds with their children.

What does a consultation call look like?

On a consultation call I'm ready to hear what problems you'd like to address in therapy and what your expectations are. This way we can start the process of learning if I'm the right fit for you. Once you feel ready to make your first appointment I will need your contact information to send you documents to complete and return prior to the appointment.

What can I expect from the first appointment?

The first appointment is our Intake Assessment where I get to learn more about your life and your concerns. The basic questions will be covered through paperwork sent via secure email. It's also a good time for you to learn more about my strengths as a therapist and determine if my expertise meets your needs.

How long does each therapy session take?

Therapy sessions are generally 45 to 60 minutes long.

What counts as a no-show and what is the no-show fee?

A "no-show" is when you either don't show up to your appointment or cancel the appointment with less than 24 hours' notice. The no-show fee is $100 and will be charged to the card you have on file. If you have more questions or concerns about this please let me know.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, I currently accept United Healthcare, Aetna, Regence, Moda, and Cigna.

Do you provide a sliding scale if I don't have insurance?

Yes, please contact me to discuss financial limitations and other payment concerns.

What are the benefits of cash-pay/self-pay?

There are multiple benefits to paying for therapy without insurance. Here is a list of benefits to consider:

  • Confidentiality - When you use insurance for therapy, your insurance company has access to documents or paperwork related to therapy such as treatment plans and progress notes. They require disclosure of diagnosis as a condition of reimbursement and proof of "medical necessity" in order to approve of the treatment. I believe it is necessary to provide appropriate treatment whenever people seek mental health support.

  • No diagnosis needed - Therapists are required to make a formal diagnosis to be reimbursed by insurance companies and therapists who see self-pay clients are free to treat them without a diagnosis. While for some clients having a formal diagnosis is helpful, others find it unncessary and at times harmful due to how the diagnosis can be perceived by others

  • Flexibility of treatment - When you pay out of pocket the control over the course of treatment is between you and your therapist. Insurance companies often set limits for types of intevention to be used, length of session time, and frequency of treatment. Without involvement of insurance companies, you and your therapist decide what's best for your specific situation.

  • More therapists - Insurance companies limit your access to therapists and some very qualified therapists may not be in-network with your specific health plan. Self-pay clients get a wider range of therapist to choose from and a greater likelihood of finding someone with the expertise they need.

  • Simple payment process - Self-pay clients avoid complicated billing issues or any potential surprises from insurance companies. Transactions are more transparent and more easily understood, meaning that potential for mistakes are minimal and any problems that arise can quickly be fixed because the transaction does not involve a third party.
